Awkward Shadow

Here comes another day, and it’s hauntingly familiar.
She left without a word, there’s not much one can say.
But I remember too well, that awkward shadow at the door.
Anguish and compassion. I can’t listen any more.

Dancing circles ’round our used to be’s.
But now what’s done is done.
Wishes count for none.

Someone’s scream broke the silence. White knuckles on the table.
Now, clasped to her uniform. Don’t let me go or I’ll fall.
I said, ‘There will be no more times, where we laughed at silly things.
No more harsh words, fighting over stupid things.’

I am lost for words, and there’s not much one can say.
Words of comfort melt like snow on a summer’s day.
That awkward shadow at the door.

Here comes another day, another torn from this world.
The image keeps returning to haunt me like a nightmare.
So when will I forget, there were no time for goodbyes.
That is where it all started: that awkward shadow at the door.

No more will sunshine light her hair,
nor will winter make her shiver.
Words of comfort melt like snow on a summer’s day.
No more will strange things make her smile,
or sad songs make her quiver.
Words of comfort melt like snow on a summer’s day.
That awkward shadow at the door.

Here comes another day, and it’s hauntingly familiar.
She left without a word. Not much one can say.
