The Letter

Standing by the doorway, she read the letter. Eyes like a child surprised.
I saw the paper tremble I heard her sigh, then smile.
Living for our music, we dreamed our dreams, waiting for a time to be heard.
I held my breath for this mystery to unfold.

She looked at me through misty eyes, cleared her voice and said:
‘What is written here … it’s the day we’ve waited for.
‘It’s a doorway to our future, and some more.’

She said ‘You and I are told to be there at eleven, it’s written here in bold.
‘If we impress, there’s a contract to be signed.
‘What an opportunity to change our lives!’ The words caught on her breath.
I’d never seen her as happy as at that time.

She wrapped her arms around me, sent my coffee to the floor.
‘Let us take this chance, we have to show we’re bold.
‘Two shooting stars will light the sky in gold.’

Now, all that joy appears to have been just yesterday,
and how in just one month so much has changed.
She acts like she is elsewhere and I’m no longer there.
She doesn’t care, doesn’t seem to care.

I said, ‘Tell me of the things that are most important,
what would bring back your smile?
‘What used to be seems unimportant now.
‘While I still live for for tomorrow’s most important plans,
‘They’re no longer in your dreams.’ That’s what you say.
‘So why look at me blankly, shake your head and walk away?’

Well, I don’t know why, would it have been a crime?
To say these things when I had the time. (come back Hayley)
Well, I don’t know why, (just a minute …) there would have been no crime.
(don’t you leave me here on my own) (going to make a mark in this world)
To say these things (Come back Hayley) when I had the time.
(don’t you leave me here on my own) (going to make a mark in this world)
(just a minute) I don’t know why (come back Hayley) would it have been a crime?
(don’t you leave me here on my own) (going to make a mark in this world)
It’s a (to say these things) doorway to our future (when I had the time) and some more.
(don’t you leave me here on my own) (going to take over the world)
